• If I weren’t a therapist, I’d like to be:
an independent international journalist
• A favorite quote:
“It is a joy to be hidden, and a disaster to not be found” – D. W. Winnicotto
•If I could have one superpower it would be:
To smell people’s intentions
• As I child I wanted to be...when I grew up:
A cartographer
• My unnecessarily passionate soap-box topic is:
I don’t like condiments, and I will let everyone know.
• My general goal in life is:
To live as much like a hobbit as possible: enjoy good food, good friends, and good stories; to find simple joys in walking, gardening, laughing, and pipe-smoking, and to care for all that is good and green in this world.
Human beings are pretty amazing. We operate with a clear idea of who we are, where we are going, and what we want. All the while, beneath the surface, our minds are making connections and associations, evoking emotions and half-memories, and crafting stories and narratives that we have no access to. Its all unconscious. Encountering the unconscious can be disorienting, uncomfortable, or even full of shame. But, together in therapy we will watch these unconscious processes unfold together, with a stance of curiosity, wonder, and awe, rather than shame or judgement.
Therapy is an exercise in honesty and freedom. The one rule for my patients is to pursue the freedom to be as honest as possible. If you feel resistance to that honesty – if you’re not feeling free to be honest about something – please be honest about that resistance. When we are able to be freely and honestly ourselves together, we make room for all of the parts of ourselves that we keep hidden (even to our self!).
I specialize in long-term, relational, depth therapy with individuals of all ages (kids, adolescents, adults, geriatric), identities (racial, cultural, religious, gender, and sexuality), and specific professions (therapists, nurses, pastors, first responders, college students). Regardless, I specialize in building an authentic, genuine, and unique relationship with each of my patients and an environment of safety, curiosity, and non-judgement. I often use the metaphor that my expertise is as a wilderness guide. I am not here to tell you what direction to go, nor am I here to give you a specific path to follow. But I am an expert in navigating the (relational) terrain and can find our way if we get lost
